Wieliczka Salt Mine

Inhalations have been used as a treatment for thousands of years, since ancient times, not only as an alternative to surgeries and other therapies, but also as a very effective treatment for all respiratory infections, particularly inhalations using brine – especially from Wieliczka. Why this is the case? Because the “Wieliczka” Salt Mine Health Resort is a unique respiratory system rehabilitation centre, created with patients of all ages in mind!

The Smok Chamber – history in a nutshell

The Smok Chamber, along with the Feliks Boczkowski Chamber, was included into the underground Health Resort complex in 2014, joining the Wessel Lake and Eastern Mountains Stable chambers. The main treasure of the “Wieliczka” Salt Mine Health Resort is its brine, whose medicinal properties have been officially confirmed and certified by a number of organisations, including the National Institute of Public Health – National Institute of Hygiene.

The chamber itself was excavated in the 1830s, which is confirmed by a map from that period. However, in order to adapt it to the needs of the Health Resort, intensive mining work was needed to be carried out. In total, 1,240 metres of glass-epoxy anchors were used to secure the working, the ceiling was reinforced, the cribs were reinforced with wood, and the bottom of the working was levelled. Sounds complicated? Sure. But it was worth it! At the depth of 135 metres, a modern inhalation hall was built, named after the Smok Crosscut neighbouring the chamber, and soon included in the “Wieliczka” Salt Mine Health Resort complex, which helps patients combat infections and respiratory diseases.

Modern inhalation hall deep underground

A perfect temperature, humidity, pressure, air movement, negative ionization and absence of toxic compounds in the atmosphere, complemented by bacteriological purity. This is the underground atmosphere characteristic of the  “Wieliczka” Salt Mine in a nutshell. The Health Resort offers a specific microclimate – the saline aerosol used for inhalations is considered to be one of the key factors in subterraneotherapy, since it contains chlorine, sodium, magnesium and calcium ions.

Thus, the Smok Chamber is a true paradise on Earth for all patients with respiratory diseases. In addition to the inhalation hall with inhalation stations, it also features a kinesitherapy room with physiotherapy equipment. The patients can take advantage of customised inhalations – brine or nebulised drug is administered in a precise manner, with adjusted parameters: intensity, temperature and density of the aerosol. What is more – even if this may sound a bit abstract – you can take advantage of a comprehensive bronchial tree cleaning procedure, which is a combination of inhalation, postural drainage and chest clapping.

All thanks to the treasure of the “Wieliczka” Salt Mine – its brine. Underground inhalations will not only support the treatment of your diseases, but will also help prevent many respiratory diseases by moisturising and diluting the mucus, helping you get rid of it easier. What about those who enjoy good health? Well, brine inhalations are also recommended for them.

The “Wieliczka” Salt Mine Health Resort – an underground rehabilitation centre

Despite the fact that the key benefits of the brine inhalations concern the respiratory system, you need to keep in mind that they also improve subcutaneous blood circulation and help with rheumatic and degenerative problems. In other words, if you want to improve the condition of your lungs and bronchi, as well as your whole body, take advantage of underground relaxation. A few hours’ underground stay at 135 metres below surface combined with physiotherapy is a great way to forget about everyday life for a moment. The Health Day offers breathing and general fitness exercises, combined with professional care provided by medical staff.

Adjusting the rehabilitation activities to the respiratory capacity of the patients is what defines the treatments offered by the “Wieliczka” Salt Mine Health Resort. The experts' opinions are clear – customising the process of both prevention and treatment is the only way to help patients. That is why the Health Resort also offers the Graduation Tower built on the surface, near the underground inhalation hall, with a total area of 7,500 m2, where you can take advantage of brine inhalations, similar to a walk on the seashore, during which the air you breathe in will remove all the particulate matter from your airways, accumulated there over many days, and help you cure recurrent or chronic diseases such as any congestions, allergies and bronchial asthma.

Brine – inhalations worth their weight in gold

You do not have to be ill to take advantage of the extraordinary properties of the underground health resort in southern Poland. You also do not have to work in a sector, where work poses inherent risks to your upper respiratory tract. You do not have to smoke either. Every day we all inhale a number of pollutants floating in the air. That is why it is worth doing something for your lungs and bronchi to enjoy great health for as long as possible.
