New adventure routes in the historic “Wieliczka” Salt Mine
The realization of the project is targeted at the revitalization of the medieval Regis Shaft as well as the neighboring historic excavations located in the close vicinity of the shaft, and allowing tourists access to it, what in effect will broaden the cultural and historic offer of the “Wieliczka” Salt Mine. This undertaking will uncover more historic information shared with the tourists about how the mine operated in the first centuries of its existence in an unconventional and attractive way presenting the methods then used for exploiting the salt deposit, protecting the chambers, draining the excavations and ventilating the undergrounds.
The Regis Shaft originated in the 14th century and is considered as the oldest existing mining shaft in Wieliczka. It is situated in the centre of the town in the neighborhood of the historic Salt Castle and the Church of St. Clemens. The project design works include the revitalization of shaft top buildings as well as preparatory and preservation works executed in the shaft together with the fitting of new passenger elevators and allowing access to the mining excavations. The visiting route will include Boczaniec, Rzepki, Tanecznica, Zamtus, Gospoda Chambers as well as chapels and fore-shafts.
The new tourist product, the Miners’ Route, is an additional route supplementing the already existing routes in the mine. It was specially designed for the more active tourists who were not completely satisfied with the less demanding Tourist Route. Guests visiting the Miners’ Route can really feel what it is like to be contemporary explorer. Equipped with miners’ lamps, helmets and absorbers they explore the secrets of nature, geology and mining techniques in the original well preserved and authentic excavations of the mine.
The route was planned having in mind those searching for action and valuing original places attractive both visually and because of their nature offering an abundance of thrills, emotions and challenges. The total cost of the New Adventure Project realized in the “Wieliczka” Salt Mine amounted to PLN 54,101,278.03. The value of eligible project costs was PLN 38,155,889.17, of which PLN 21,668,729.46 were a grant from the European Union allocated in compliance with Action 6.4 „Investing in the tourist product of a supra-national significance” Operational Program Innovative Economy.
