Rock salt is the only edible rock know to Man. It is used not only for enhancing flavour, but also for preserving. It quite frequently symbolizes wisdom, seals friendships, sanctions agreements, and protects against misfortunes. Salt, is a powerful symbol and has many practical uses. One could say without hesitation that it is a mineral essential for life.
Salt creates unusual landscapes. Salts formed in the process of secondary crystallization not only during the geological period, as for instance the Crystal Grottoes, but also, nowadays, sometimes bringing to mind a genuine winter scene.
Thanks to the Austrians who had first established the Book of Guests in 1774, today it is possible to follow the long list of famous and renown celebrities that had once visited the mine.
Salt. In Wieliczka, rock salt is no longer mined, nor is evaporated salt produced on an industrial scale. However, every year, several thousand tons of salt evaporate is produced from the salty waters of the mine. Wieliczka evaporated salt is one of the purest salts available on the European market.
The “Wieliczka” Salt Mine was one of the first 12 sites entered onto the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List in 1978. Preserving this exceptional underground monument, one of the greatest tourist attractions of Poland in the best possible condition, requires a number of mining securing, renovation and modernisation works.
Very high air purity, especially regarding its microbiologic aspect (because of aseptic properties of salt) – microorganisms have no proper conditions for breeding and growth; lack of air pollution: no dust, gas contamination, allergens, bacteria.
